The 2022 Fimi X8 SE has received quite a make-over from its 2018 predecessor. While the appearance of a drone is often not changed, this drone gives you many more options. Therefore, the drone is almost not comparable to its predecessor of two years ago.

Auto modi
The Fimi X8 SE comes with a whole bunch of automatic functions. It automatically follows you around, can land on its own, go ‘home’ by itself and come back to you on demand. All this is done by a built-in sensor using GPS, Glonass and Beidou. Should you lose connection, the drone will always come back to you.
Quite handy when its battery dies or when the drone gets out of sight and loses connection. The drone is equipped with a camera on its bottom side. Combined with a coloured launchpad, this allows you to take off and perform a precision landing. Various video reviews show that the drone doesn’t always land in the middle, but it does get a good score.
First person view
To many people, this is a very cool option. The Fimi X8 SE offers first person view with the remote controller, changing the entire perspective. You could simply see the images live on your smartphone or any other connected screen and then use the control sticks to manoeuvre and get some great shots.
Wide range
Lots of cheap drones have a small range of only a few hundred metres. This cheap Fimi X8 SE lets you fly over large lakes or fields without losing connection.
Even more so, it can cover a distance of 5 kilometres without losing its signal. In that respect, it is quite special, because some $1,500 drones achieve the same or a similar range.
Image quality
Momentarily, there are many very cheap drones on the internet that claim to shoot 4K images. However, then suddenly you will find that you are subjected to certain concessions: the FPS might go down to 20 frames per second, or the overall resolution is low.
The Fimi X8 SE simply comes with 4K 100 Mbps quality. This means that you can put your videos on Youtube in 4K quality. Not bad.
Battery life
The 2022 Fimi X8 SE has a battery life of 35 minutes, thanks to its 4,500 mAh battery. While this only differs by a few minutes from some other drones, it’s pretty impressive that this is possible in this price range.
Especially when looking at the much more expensive DJI Mavic 2 Pro, where the flight time is 29-31 minutes.

On AliExpress, the Fimi X8 SE is a lot cheaper than at European or American shops. So unless you need it this week, why pay tens of dollars extra?
Xiaomi is a reliable brand bought in Europe and the US. There are dozens of reviews of this particular drone online. It gets several very good reviews, so the only hurdle you need to clear is making sure you find a reliable seller. The best place to do that is the official Fimi Store.
What to look out for when buying the Fimi X8 SE on AliExpress?
The Fimi X8 SE can be bought on AliExpress without any problems. You won’t have to worry too much about the delivery – after 200+ orders I’ve never had anything go missing from Ali. And if it does happen, you’ll always have buyer’s protection.
I have heard stories of people getting their money back after complaining about lost packages, after which they got the package after all: free of charge.
However, you do need to pay attention to the import tax and VAT for your country. In Europe, you’d pay VAT for packages above 22 Euros, and above 150 Euros you’d pay import duties. As of 2021, packages under 22 euro shall also be subject to VAT. The US and UK have their own conditions for importing Chinese goods.
So please bear in mind that an additional amount of several tens of dollars may be added.
